Nunmill Street, York

The existing house at Nunmill Street was a 2 bedroom, 2 storey terrace, with damp issues and in serious need of modernisation. Our Client wanted to create a modern house, whilst also adding 2 bedrooms, so the house could function as a home from home for their grown up children.

We proposed a modest side return extension to the rear, whilst opening up the ground floor to create a light, clean space. The loft conversion, with dormer window utilises space efficiently to accommodate two double bedrooms and a shower room. The front of the house was to retain more of the Victorian character, with plaster cornicing and traditional skirting reinstated, while the rear had a more open-plan, contemporary character. The transition between these spaces is handled by sliding glazed doors which feature black frames and horizontal transoms. This subtle industrial character was continued throughout the house, with detailing of doors, lighting, an exposed brick wall, black painted exposed steelwork and the staircase, which featured a black metal balustrade. This continues externally, where the use of black powder coated pressed metal, together with very light grey painted brickwork gives a smart finish.
